DEKALB NEIGHBORHOOD SUMMIT - November 13th, 8:00-1:30
The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment is gearing up for its 2nd Annual Neighborhood Summit. This year, the summit will be held in conjunction with the Green Expo hosted by our Green Commission. The goal is to give residents the tools they need to build a stronger community. Last year's summit drew more than 500 citizens, representing more than 300 neighborhood and civic associations, who participated in community roundtables and presentations, and received valuable information on county services including neighborhood watch, greenspace and cooperative extension.
Registration is free! Click here to the visit the Summit homepage to register!
Registration closes on November 9th! Do not delay! Register now!
THE ASHFORD ALLIANCE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION PRESENTS THEIR 2010 CANDIDATES' FAIR
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9TH
11:00am – 2:30pm
ST. MARTIN IN THE FIELDS EPISCOPAL CHURCH
GABLE HALL & AMPHITHEATER
3110 ASHFORD DUNWOODY ROAD, NE
ATLANTA, GA 30319
Neighbors, save the date! Due to the resounding success of our 2008 Candidates' Fair, the Ashford Alliance will host candidates vying for statewide and local elected positions in the 2010 General Election. Nearly 70 candidates for everything from Governor, to the Commissioners of various state agencies, to our local districts' state General Assembly, to DeKalb school board members and various judgeships have been invited to attend.
This event is open to ALL RESIDENTS of our community. You are encouraged to come meet the candidates in person … and hear them speak. Candidates are being offered the opportunity to give 10-minute "stump speeches" during the event. A schedule of who is going to speak when will be posted on www.AshfordAlliance.org soon.
Remember … One-third of these candidates are going to be elected to positions which will affect every aspect of our lives, from the economy to our schools to taxes and more! This may well be your best chance to make your opinions known directly to the people who will legislate and adjudicate for the next several years. Let's turn out in force and show these candidates that our residents are an engaged electorate!
Bonus Activity: The St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church youth group "Journey to Adulthood" will hold a bake sale concurrent with this event to raise support for their 2011 pilgrimage. Bring lots of dollar bills to help these kids out!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
The Ashford Alliance needs your help. We are hosting a Candidates’ Fair Saturday, October 9th, and we have more things to do than people to do them. We aren’t asking anyone to give up their entire day or even to stay at the event from start to finish. If
you can spare an hour or two this Saturday to work a single shift … while having a great time and being a great help to your community, please let us know. To volunteer, e-mail Jeff Turnage at jojetu@mindspring.com or call him at (770) 451-2589.
Available Assignments, Times & Responsibilities
Yard sign corral: 10:30 – 2:30 Hang out and visit with your neighbors, while keeping an eye on the candidates’ yard signs to be sure they don’t walk off. Help folks who want to take a sign to display later get it out of the stack.
Amphitheater Moderator: 11:00 – 2:30 Introduce speakers to the audience, reading from a script. Ensure speakers start on time. Hold speakers to their allotted times.
Music & Motion Room Moderator: 11:00 – 2:30 Introduce speakers to the audience, reading from a script. Ensure speakers start on time. Hold speakers to their allotted times. Make sure latecomers use the right door.
Entryway Greeter: 10:30 – 2:30 Guide candidates and attendees to the proper places. Make folks welcome to be our guests.
Candidate Sign-In Table: 10:15 – 11:30 Welcome candidates. Collect candidates’ and campaign workers’ business cards or have them sign in. Give them their table tent cards.
Resident Sign-In Table: 10:45 – 2:15 Welcome guests. Manage the sign-in process.
Set-up: 9:00 – 10:30 Help unfold and position 8-foot tables. Help put out chairs.
Break-down: 2:30 – 3:00 Help fold up and put away 8-foot tables. Help put chairs up. Help clean up campaign literature left behind.
As you can see, none of these tasks are very complex … we just don’t have enough folks on the Board of Directors to do everything. Duration times are not shift times. If four of you volunteer to be an entryway greeter, then the shift time will be only one hour. We greatly appreciate any help you may want to lend to make this event a great success!
