Community Update Re: DKPD North Precinct

North Precinct will be breaking ground in early 2011 on a new precinct building near PDK Airport off of Clairmont Road between Bragg Street and Young Street. The building will back up to the airport property.
The building will be facing Clairmont Road.
The current location will continue to operate as a 2nd precinct within North Precinct.

Just an up-date: "The contractor building the new bridge over Ga. 400 at Hammond Drive will convert all traffic to the new section on the North side on December 10th, 2010 at 9PM. The existing bridge will be closed, permanently. This will be the traffic flow until the new 9 lane bridge is complete in Fall 2011. All traffic issues that could be accounted for were and all appropriate measures taken. However, this is a new flow and will take some adjustment and this will remain a construction zone.

AACA President Rabbi Scott Sauson responds to the Dekalb Commission's announcement regarding Water & Sewer rates:

Dear Commissioners,
On behalf of the Board of the Ashford Alliance Community Association, representing North DeKalb Neighborhoods Inside I-285, I petition you to postpone your meeting of December 7, at which you intend to determine water and sewage rates, until after the public meeting scheduled in Dunwoody later that evening.
On the surface, holding a rate vote before public input is democratically incredulous, not to mention spiteful.
Also, we are concerned that any across-the-board rate hike at this time of economic stress will prove to be an unsustainable burden on low income and underemployed families.

"I, like you, am extremely concerned about the proposed increase in water bills for DeKalb residents. That is why Commissioner May and I thought it would be helpful to hold a meeting next Tuesday, 12/7 at 6:30 PM at the Dunwoody City Hall (see attached press release for additional information). The county has already held several meetings regarding the increase but considering the number of emails and calls my office is receiving, it sounds like this meeting would be beneficial to many of you. If you disapprove of the recommended increases, you should consider also contacting the CEO, Burrell Ellis, at ceo@co.dekalb.ga.us or by phone at 404-371-2881.

Our Magnet Schools: Rumor vs. Reality by Rabbi Scott Saulson, PhD, AACA President
Having been alerted to rumors floating about the removal of the magnet program from Chamblee High School and/or the consolidation of magnet programs elsewhere, on behalf of the AACA Board I attended a specially called informational meeting on Monday, November 16, held at Kittredge Magnet School. A strong parental turn out from the school was addressed by DeKalb County School Board members: Mr. H. Paul Womack, Finance Committee Chair; Mr. James Redovian, District 1; and, Dr. Pamela Speaks, Super District 8. According to all three, the Board and the administration are committed to a rational, factually based approach to closing schools that are not financially sustainable given the shortage of revenue and the demographic changes in parts of the county, especially in the south versus the north end, where even greater growth is anticipated. As for magnet schools, there are no plans or discussions, except for duplicating the successes recorded in our neighborhood. Should the matter be otherwise, it will not even be broached until 2012-13.

On behalf of Partnership for Community Action, Inc., the Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will be accepting application beginning November 1, 2010 for Senior Citizens 65 and older; disabled with wheelchair, cane, walker, breathing device or legally blind; and those with life threatening medical conditions. Montgomery Elementary School Girl Scouts & Chamblee 1st United Methodist Canned Food Drive
What is the Food Drive? For over 30 years, canned food donations have helped provide local families help with their Thanksgiving Meal. We are anticipating feeding 1000 people in our local community this year!
What is included in the Basket? Each basket will contain a Hormel Ham, a 3 lb bag of apples, a 3 lb bag of onions and a wide variety of canned and dried food items such as green vegetables, corn, flour, beans (dried and canned), rice, oil, fruit, boxed dessert mixes, juices, peanut butter and jelly & much more! It is considered to be approximately a week's worth of groceries for each family.
Who are the Families? All of our families are identified by counselors in our local schools system (Chamblee H.S., Chamblee M.S., Huntley Hills, Montgomery Elementary and various churches). So, it is truly a community initiative with the community organizing, donating and distributing these baskets to our neighbors.
How can you help? Your canned donations are so important! We cannot have Thanksgiving Baskets without your donations. All canned and dried food items are gratefully accepted but suggested donations listed below.
Canned goods will be collected door to door in neighborhood by your Montgomery Elementary School Girl Scouts:
Brittany Neighborhoods: Oct. 17th 3 - 5 p.m.
Murphey Candler Neighborhoods: Oct. 24th - 3 - 5 p.m.
If you would like to drop off your food donations, collection sites also include:

AACA Launches Home & Neighborhood Vitality Initiative
In cooperation with Senior Connections and Housemate Match, the AACA has launched a pilot program with our Neighborhood Association Members. Our first initiative will be in Huntley Hills, Adam Stine, HHNA President and AACA Member.
Purpose: To maintain and upgrade the physical and social infrastructure of our individual and greater neighborhoods.
How:
The match is thoroughly screened and monitored under the auspices of a leading community non-profit, Housemate Match, www.atlantajcc.org/services/housemate-match
This pilot program will be monitored by our cooperative partners for quality and effectiveness.
Any homeowner 55+ is invited to attend the presentation and benefit from either or both of the services. However, the pilot program itself will be neighborhood based, beginning with Huntley Hills.

The Board and Members of the AACA have amended our By-Laws to broaden the participation by and opportunities for community stakeholders. We invite all residents, households, business owners, and non-profit boards within our Greater Neighborhood to take advantage of this amendment.
“Any resident, household, business owner, or non-profit board within the geographical boundaries of the AACA who is in good standing with respect to dues* as levied by the Board, may become and shall be known as an “Associate Member.” Associate Members, while not being accorded voting rights, shall be entitled to:
