State of the AACA Report
by
Rabbi Scott B. Saulson, PhD, President, 2011
Presented at the Annual General Meeting
19 January 2011
Strengths
- Our mission
- Our board
- Cohesiveness
- Commitment
- Institutional knowledge
- Enhanced visibility and reputation, especially among DeKalb County officials
- Well-run Events
- Candidates’ Forum
- Candidates’ Fair
- National Night Out
- Senior Initiative, Community Stabilization
- Holiday Party
- Openness
- Maintained open-door policy and transparency at meetings and in communications.
- Broadened outreach to include individual members.
- Convened focus groups with our Associative Members and Board with nearly unanimous participation.
Challenges
- 25 out of 75 registered members. Growth beyond 33% remains a goal.
- Attendance at membership meetings insubstantial. Board has spent a year reviewing the pros and cons of monthly meetings in view of lack of topical focus and poor attendance. Instead, efforts have been focused on providing forums for Associative Members on their home turf. The Board intends to resume monthly meetings under the heading of “Community 101” while still making available these and other programs to specific neighborhood associations upon their request.
- Committee involvements: looking for reliable, competent, and engaged members, whether or not on the Board.
- Clarifying our leadership role: the Board, as a matter of policy, will partner with and support neighborhood initiated efforts, but will not take the lead in these initiatives; however, the Board will assume leadership in matters it deems to affect most, if not all, of its membership.
Prospects
- Continuity of Board
- Events
- Restoration of monthly meetings, focusing on information and education to build a base for intelligent and effective citizenship involvement in community and county affairs; willingness and readiness to take such programs to neighborhoods as well – Local 101
- October – Appreciation of Fire Fighters as focus of 2011 in lieu of Police Force, which event has occurred in August.
- Openness
- Renovation of website with dedicated webmaster:
- Individual opportunities to advertise.
- Community opportunities to communicate to wider audience.
- Input from residents via on-line surveys.
- Renewal of effort to attract committee involvement.
- Willingness and readiness to attend any neighborhood association special or annual meetings.
About the AACA:
The Ashford Alliance is a nonprofit Georgia corporation which was formed in 2006 to address the numerous issues that impact all of our residents. Our mission is to inform the people who live inside the AACA boundaries of matters which can affect their quality of life and to provide a voice to those neighborhoods which otherwise might not be heard. More than 60 separate neighborhoods have been identified within our borders. All are encouraged to participate in our activities and meetings. If your neighborhood is not currently represented in the Alliance, please contact us.
Membership in the Ashford Alliance is voluntary. Charter Members include Ashford Forest, Brittany, Byrnwyck, Chaucer Wood, D'Youville, Gainsborough, Hampton Hall, Huntley Hills, Murphey Candler, Oak Forest, Oglethorpe Estates, Sexton Woods and West Nancy Creek, among others.
